MTN 5G Service Is Now Available In 190 Locations Across Nigeria
MTN, Nigeria's largest telecoms company, launched its Fifth-Generation (5G) service this morning in 190 locations across the country, primarily in Lagos and Abuja. According to BusinessDay sources, some customers have reported internet speeds of up to 1.4g per second.
The service went live on the same day that the National Communications Commission (NCC) set aside as the official distribution date for the service.

The MTN 5G service is expected to be in operational across 500-600 locations nationwide the country by the end of October.
Only a small number of these devices could access the 5G service in Nigeria as of Wednesday morning due to the modifications and software updates required.

Furthermore, Apple or Samsung phones users will most likely have to wait a little longer for the update to take place from the phone manufacturers.
Samsung may be able to make the required changes in as little as a month to six weeks so that Nigerian subscribers can access the 5G service, whereas iPhone users may have to wait until October.

Despite the fact that MTN has already begun the 5G service, Mafab Communications has been granted a five-month extension for the service's implementation in Nigeria.
After winning the 3.5GHz spectrum license in December and paying the Federal Government $550 million as early as February, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) granted MTN and Mafab Communications the August 24 (Wednesday) rollout date.

Following 11 rounds of auction that lasted eight hours, Mafab and MTN Nigeria appears as the two winning champions of the 3.5 gigahertz (GHz) spectrum auction for the discharge of 5G technology in Nigeria in December 2021.
The Commission also announced that the two companies each paid a total sum of $273.6 million license fee for the 5G spectrum in February 2022.

According to Mafab, the licensees were expected to begin rolling out 5G services on August 24, 2022, in consonance with the terms of the 5G license. Mafab, on the other hand, has been given a five-month extension as a result of the delays in receiving its UASL and Numbering plan, which was not due until the end of July.

Nigeria has now officially launched the 5G network, associating South Africa and Kenya with MTN's launch earlier today. South Africa discharged its 5G network through MTN and Vodacom in March.
Kenya, on the contrary, began the deployment through Safaricom in April.
According to the Global Mobile Suppliers (GMS), 5G is expected to outstretch one billion users this year after only 3.5 years of use, compared to for years for 4G and 12 years for 3G.
